(You'll have trouble listening to it.) It's not all bad though. Or maybe they were just having trouble delivering the awful dialogue. Perhaps they had read the script after signing their contracts, and realized what a mess they were trapped in. By the end you'll be wishing Mulder's alien visitors had popped up after all.ĭuchovny and Anderson were electrifying in the 90s as the sci-fi sleuths, but this time they underplay their characters to the point of comatose. And the reason for the stomach churning harvesting of body parts is poorly explained and even more poorly resolved.

If you're unfamiliar with Mulder's lost sister, Scully's lost son, or the character of Skinner, you'll be confused at certain points of the film.īut why take six years to make a film that seems so disconnected from the original premise in the first place? The X Files: I Want to Believe initially sets itself up as a tussle between science and faith, and a dark journey into the world of a psychic, but the possibly intriguing character of Father Joe is pushed aside halfway through as the movie morphs into a facsimile of the gruesome Saw series.

Carter and team have been quoted as saying that they wanted to create a stand-alone story, that didn't require a knowledge of the series' mythology, but even on that score they've failed.

This feature completely avoids the alien invasion and abduction element that made the TV show, and previous feature, so interesting and compelling.

The pieces do not fit together, plot strands are left hanging, there are huge gaping holes in logic and what's worse, there doesn't seem to be a point to anything at all. It just would have been nice for him to share this knowledge with his audience. The X Files creator Chris Carter has stepped into the director's role for this second film, and he's co-written the script the Frank Spotnitz, so he probably has a very clear idea about the plot, and the motivations of his characters. The priest (played by Billy Connolly) has a murky past, but he may be able to help Scully with her present troubles, and also provide a key to her complicated relationship with Mulder. Mulder is called in to verify the priest's claims, and Scully reluctantly tags along. An agent has gone missing in the snowy wilderness of West Virginia and the only leads are coming from a disgraced priest who claims to have psychic visions. But it's time for Mulder to have shave because the FBI wants him back. We know he's a loner because he's grown a very dodgy beard. Meanwhile her partner Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) has been kicked out of the Federal Bureau and spends his time alone in his room following up his various theories of alien abductions and other unexplained phenomena. Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) is no longer working with the FBI, and is now a doctor at a church-funded hospital. Picking up six years since the events at the conclusion of the cult TV show, this second feature film from creator Chris Carter (following 1998's The X Files: Fight the Future) I Want to Believe finds that things have changed quite significantly for the two central characters. But perhaps the biggest question relating to The X Files: I Want to Believe is how on earth it managed to get made in the first place. X Files refer to those strange cases that remain unsolved, and raise more questions than they yield answers. Mulder and Scully have returned for a new chapter in The X Files saga. You can't keep a good science-fiction mystery solving couple down for long.
